Community Updates:

There a few noteworthy things happening in our little community.

We first want to give a shoutout to OBBC ambassador Will Forrest. Will was just in Hawaii for an ESA All Stars trip. He took a quiver of custom Shell Shapes surfboards for all the conditions the North Shore can offer.  From Off the Wall to Sunset, Will was on it the whole trip! He also received training from ESA coach Jason Motes all week! We're proud of you Will!

Another update in our community, is the opening of the Jug Handle Bridge in Rodanthe.

A community day will be held April 9th from 1pm to 5pm where folks can come walk, run or bike the bridge before it is opened to the public. There will also be a "Run the Rodanthe Bridge" 5k and 5 mile marathon that morning. Parking for the event will be at the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Community Center.

It will certainly change traffic patterns, with the addition of a traffic circle, the first one ever on Hatteras Island. As you exit the bridge and are heading south, you will take the first exit out the roundabout. Traffic coming from the North, not coming from the bridge should be minimal with just a few houses north of the roundabout. Apart from traffic and the landscape being changed, the project is sure to change how surfers and beach goers alike get to the famed surf spots like S-turns. You used to be able to park right off highway 12 and walk right over the dune, now that walk will take a little longer. The bridge connects the southern part of Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge to the northern portion of Rodanthe, bypassing the S-turns section of highway 12 completely. This section of the road which has always been prone to over wash during storms will be decommissioned and be demolished later this year. This leaves surfers with the uncertainty of where to park and how to access northern Rodanthe in the future. It will be interesting to see how this situation plays out this summer.
